125 drives meet the rule below, 14 of them with a live Amazon listing. A NAS writes continuously, so this page ranks on rated endurance rather than on speed. Drives without a DRAM cache are excluded, because sustained random writes are exactly where they fall behind.
What is on this list
A drive is included when it meets all of:
- Rated at 0.5 drive writes per day or more, or 1,200 TBW or more
- Not DRAM-less
What this data does not tell you:
- Power-loss protection, which is the feature that separates a true NAS or enterprise drive from a desktop one, is not recorded in our source data.
- Endurance ratings are the manufacturer's warranty figure, not a measured result, and they are quoted for the largest capacity in a family.
- Few of these drives currently have a live Amazon listing in our data, so most rows here are for comparison rather than immediate purchase.

Endurance is the specification that matters
A desktop drive is rated for a few hundred terabytes written across its warranty. A NAS that takes backups, runs surveillance recording or hosts virtual machines can consume that in a fraction of the expected life. Drive writes per day, normalised to capacity, is the figure to compare.
Why DRAM-less drives are excluded
Without an onboard mapping table, a DRAM-less drive leans on Host Memory Buffer and on its SLC cache. Both work well for bursty desktop use and neither holds up under continuous writing, which is what a NAS does by definition.
SATA still has a place here
Most NAS enclosures expose SATA bays and cap out well below NVMe speeds anyway, so a durable SATA drive is often the better buy than a fast NVMe one. Where the enclosure has M.2 slots, they are frequently intended for caching rather than for the main pool.
Common questions
Can I use ordinary desktop SSDs in a NAS?
They will work, but their rated endurance assumes a desktop duty cycle. For a lightly used home NAS that may be acceptable; for continuous writes it shortens the warranted life considerably.
Does a NAS need NVMe?
Usually not. Network speed is the bottleneck in most home and small-office setups, and even a 10 GbE link does not saturate a good SATA SSD array.
